Updates

This is a running list of items in certain major categories that have been scanned. It will be updated as necessary. This is not a comprehensive list of everything that has been scanned. This list is for those who are interested in the progress being made, as well as a handy reference for those doing the scanning until the vault the materials are stored in can be reorganized.

Edit 8-25-2022: Only the months listed for a particular year are available. The list includes several years with no months listed- either nothing has been scanned yet for that year, or that year has been listed because logically that year should be included in the material on hand, even though those materials have not yet been located.

Edit 8/07/2026: The purpose of this list was to keep track of what had and had not been scanned when the documents were in off-site storage. In the time since the off-site storage was eliminated, and the bulk of the digitized collection was relocated to other storage, this list has not been maintained, although additional documents are being added to the digitized records on an ongoing basis. Some edits have been made to the list, but the added dates have been removed.

Switch Lists

Two types of switch lists were found. The first is PHD Form 24, which utilized handwritten lists on a cardstock sheet. The other was PHD Form 112, which were bound books with the number of the locomotive/caboose the book was assigned to written on the cover. Form 112 books were also used for yard checks and for cars to be switched at individual stations.

Update 11-6-2022:
Various additional documents from the two valuations completed in the 1920’s and 1930’s has been digitized, including typed copies of what appears to be most of the AFE’s from the very beginning of the PH&D through the early 1950’s and testimony from I.C.C. hearings in the mid-1920’s. Some of the content from the AFE’s has been added to this site, although most of that content likely won’t be added until the digitizing phase of the project is completed (i.e. we run out of time).
Most of the material digitized since the middle of October is from the 1920’s-1930’s and includes a number of documents relating to the 1920’s George W. Handy bankruptcy and its reopening several years later by his son Gilbert. These items were digitized for the future Detroit Bay City & Western Historical Something-or-Other being organized by Mr. William Rauli. For clarification, although the PH&D was initially built by the Handy-owned Bay County Construction Company, the primary focus of this website are the decades following the ownership transition from the Handy family to the Duffy family. A number of documents have been found that cover the transition period, which will likely make their way to this site, as will a brief history of the company prior to the ownership transition.
It is also possible that this site will have a Facebook page to host modeling information until that information can be added to this site. At this time it is unknown exactly what the name of the page will be, but it will be linked to this site once it’s ready.
